Registers of the University in Olomouc

1576–1651 / 1652–1729

The registers of the University in Olomouc are a priceless source of information about the earliest period and the beginnings of higher education in Olomouc. They reveal valuable facts about matriculated and graduated students, especially about their birthplace and country of origin, and often uncover white spots in the lives of important historical figures. The registers show a great interest in studies at the Olomouc university among students from Silesia, Poland, Bohemia and Hungary, as well as from the Nordic and southern countries. They also provide an insight into the complex network of social ties and the functioning of power structures and relations, which were often formed during the period of university studies. This is why the registers form an integral part of the collective memory of Palacký University and a testimony of the importance and significance of the Academy in the early modern period.

The edition of the oldest registers of the University in Olomouc, compiled by Libuše and Vladimír Spáčilovi, maps the period from the university’s foundation in 1573 to 1729. The books can be downloaded for free in electronic form, or you can buy the printed version via the e-shop of Palacký University Press.
